World Lung Cancer Day | August 1

Today, August 1, we mark World Lung Cancer Day.

The day brings awareness to lung cancer causes, prevention, and the importance of early detection.

What to know

According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the leading cause of death among cancer patients. The good news: when caught early, survival rates increase. Early diagnosis can raise 5-year survival rates by almost 56%.

Lung cancer can affect anyone. Key risk factors include smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, and exposure to dangerous chemicals like radon gas.

How to observe #WORLDLUNGCANCERDAY:

1.Talk to your health care provider about your risk and whether screening is right for you

2. Review your family history and encourage loved ones to get screened. Make it a day for both of you

3. Get screened if recommended. Screening helps with early detection, not prevention, but it can save lives

4. Reduce your risk: refrain from tobacco, test your home for radon, avoid overexposure to cancer-causing chemicals, eat healthy and exercise

5. Spread awareness online using #WorldLungCancerDay

Quick fact:

World Lung Cancer Day was founded by Betsy Thompson through the Lung Cancer Survivors Foundation to educate people and promote screening around the globe.

Early detection matters. Today, take one step for your lung health.
